(S)urvey Pre-Reading Activity
Surveying helps you to:
define the nature of questions that may arise during actual reading phase
formulate new cognitive categories or expand existing one
put the material in context
formulate specific questions about the material surveyed
How to Survey:
Look up the main topic in the Table of Contents
Read about the topic in a commercial outline or hornbook
Take brief notes
What are the basic rules, definitions and tests.
Quickly (5-10 minutes) survey the entire reading assignment in order to
mentally prepare for what is coming.
Do a quick superficial reading
Review the casebook headings and the headings of the assigned cases. Review
headings and summary paragraphs to find clues of the three to six main
ideas that will serve as a basis for the discussion
