Mastery of some sort of efficient reading system like SQ3R will allow you to spend less time reading assigned material than students that do not use a system.

(S)urvey Pre-Reading Activity

Surveying helps you to:

define the nature of questions that may arise during actual reading phase

formulate new cognitive categories or expand existing one

put the material in context

formulate specific questions about the material surveyed

How to Survey:
Look up the main topic in the Table of Contents

Read about the topic in a commercial outline or hornbook

Take brief notes

What are the basic rules, definitions and tests.

Quickly (5-10 minutes) survey the entire reading assignment in order to mentally prepare for what is coming.

Do a quick superficial reading

Review the casebook headings and the headings of the assigned cases. Review headings and summary paragraphs to find clues of the three to six main ideas that will serve as a basis for the discussion

(Q)uestion - Reading Activity

Questioning helps you to:

Read efficiently

Read effectively
How to Question
Formulate questions before reading

Read to answer the questions

(R)ecite- (R)eview- (R)eview - Post-Reading Activity

Reciting helps you to:

select and analyze larger amounts of material

transfer ideas from short-term to long-term memory

How to Recite
Recite from memory a summary of the material read by writing it down

put it in a brief note in your own words

no more than a few words or phrases

Reviewing helps you to:

remember material longer

rethink the questions originally asked and to think about the answers to possible additional questions

How to Review
first without reference to notes or text

then review notes and underlining

the review should reveal to you things that you missed on the earlier reading
