There are times when you simply must memorize information. Try this approach:

  • Make the information you need to memorize important. If it's important to you, you'll find it easier to remember.
  • Make sure you have the information right and that you understand it thoroughly.
  • Associate the new material with related facts that you already know.
  • Organize the material so you can put it in its proper place in your memory. Try to see where it fits into a larger whole.
  • Use more than one technique for remembering (experiment to see the ones which work best for you):
    • Use the information - write it down, doodle with it, use it in conversations.
    • Repetition - repeat or write it down multiple times.
    • Recitation - say it out loud (multiple times).
    • Teaching another - explain it to another person.
    • Visualizing - picture the information (several times a day, whenever you remember that you should be studying it).
    • Music and rhyme - make up a song or poem with the information in it. Sing the song or recite the poem several times.
    • Association - connect the information with a "key" - a word, phrase or image that reminds you of something about the material you are trying to memorize. For example, if you need to memorize the scientific name of a fruit bat, try associating it with "Halloween".
